Abstract

Studeren in Denemarken is gratis.

Abstract

Dick van Gameren, a partner with the renowned Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo, has engaged in housing design for the past twenty-five years through his work as an architect as well as in his research and teaching at TU Delft’s Global Housing Study Center. In this book, he presents around forty of his own projects in this field, through concise texts and photographs with explanatory captions as well as plans and drawings. The projects are grouped to illustrate seven specific aspects of housing design: Streets and Squares, Courtyards and Patios, Gardens, Halls, the Fireplace, Walls, and Roofs. Together, they constitute a multifaceted catalog of housing typologies. In four supplementary essays, van Gameren explores evolutions in residential architecture in the Netherlands. He positions his own concepts in the context of these developments and expands on what he considers the key factors of good housing design. He places particular focus on affordable housing, a pressing issue in so many countries and metropolitan areas around the world.Dutch Dwellings is an inspiring read for anyone involved in housing design today.

Abstract

Most of the residential buildings in Europe were built between 1945 and 1975. Within this short phase of just 30 years, the stock was not only renewed, but also significantly expanded. The public sector has a special role to play here. Thus, the state and the institutions involved had to eliminate the existing housing shortage and at the same time had the unique opportunity to realize their political ideals. The publication shows for the first time how a fundamental renovation of living and its architectural implementation could succeed against this background. The comparison of individual projects makes it clear which superordinate topics the residential buildings negotiate and how local issues find their way into the architecture. The study is based on seventy selected settlements and buildings from seven European cities. Shown are projects from Brussels, Zagreb, Cologne, Oslo, Porto, Lyon and Athens.

Abstract

Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape.

Abstract

Do you know how to create beautiful buildings that truly promote social change? Architects need to understand how to design for social equity, but too often this is presented as a choice between work that does good and work that looks good. When done well, building for social equity can directly enhance the formal, experimental and creative language of architecture. Renowned architects Sara Caples and Everardo Jefferson, who have been designing for underserved multi-cultural communities in New York for decades, provide thought leadership that is deeply rooted in practice. By urging architects to approach equity projects with an open mind, the volume highlights the need to dig deep into the diverse culture of local neighbourhoods. It provides techniques to encourage listening, communicating and fully engaging with users, resulting in imaginative design responses that draw on all the tools that the architect possesses. Packed with interviews from established and up-and-coming designers, and highly illustrated case studies from all over the world, this accessibly written book serves both as a point of inspiration and a challenge to Western-centric ways of working. Ultimately, it explores how listening to the aspirations of diverse communities enriches designs and broadens the architectural language of all involved. Featuring: International case studies from Austria, Brazil, Bolivia, China, Egypt, India, USA and many more Interviews from leading designers, including: Tatiana Bilbao, Wanda Dalla Costa, Andres Lepik, Xu Tiantian, Li Xiaodong, Sara Zewde Guidance on a range of topics, from integrating narratives to working with colour, communicating with communities and stakeholders to ethical practice

Abstract

Housing is the basic building block of any city, dictating its character, scale, and structure. London is often associated with terraced houses and garden squares, but is also significantly characterised by large, purpose-built blocks of flats, otherwise known as mansion blocks. This landmark survey commissioned by The Architecture Foundation looks at the evolution of the London mansion block from the 1850s to the present day, offering a detailed encounter with the type and its role in defining the contemporary city.Covering twenty-seven examples, richly illustrated by newly commissioned drawings and photographs, this volume reflects on the architectural ambitions and lived realities of these quotidian buildings. Architectural and urban designer Karin Templin considers the ways in which the mansion block came to define large areas of the city from Westminster and South Kensington in the nineteenth century to Kilburn and Stratford in the twenty-first. Reflecting London’s development from its consolidation as a metropolis in the high Victorian era to its present efforts to address a longstanding housing crisis, this volume explores the mansion block’s centrality to the capital’s identity and its wider relevance to discussions of housing and urban planning. This book is first in a series on types of London housing, reflecting on the place of the home in the city in the light of its longstanding housing crisis.
